1. What is new about EFM over point-to-point fiber?

In addition to extending the reach of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet to 10 km, the EFM Task Force introduced three major innovations with respect to the existing fiber-optic Ethernet PHYs: support for bidirectional operation over a single fiber (the BX10 PHY family), 100 Mbps PHYs operating over single-mode fiber (100BASE-LX10/BX10), and specifications for components in extended temperature ranges.
